Description

A cozy, shareable appetizer featuring a whole Camembert cheese baked inside a bread bowl, topped with sweet caramelized onions and fresh thyme, perfect for dipping with bread pieces.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 round loaf of sourdough bread (about 8 inches in diameter)
  • 1 wheel of Camembert cheese (8 oz)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 garlic clove, minced

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice off the top of the sourdough loaf and hollow out the center, leaving about a 1-inch border to create a bread bowl. Set aside the removed bread for dipping.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil. Add sliced onions and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in sugar, salt, and pepper, then reduce heat to low and cook for another 20 minutes until onions are golden and caramelized. Stir in minced garlic and thyme leaves in the last 2 minutes.
  3. Place the Camembert wheel inside the hollowed bread bowl. Top with the caramelized onion mixture. Cover with the bread top or wrap loosely in foil.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from oven, garnish with extra thyme, and serve warm with bread pieces for dipping.

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
