For the Crust:
- 1 large pre-made flatbread or pizza crust
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 medium apple (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: balsamic glaze for drizzling
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place flatbread on a baking sheet.
- Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until caramelized and golden brown.
- Spread caramelized onions evenly over the flatbread. Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
- Arrange apple slices on top of the cheese. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly and edges are crisp.
- Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and optionally drizzle with balsamic glaze before slicing and serving.
