Description

A savory-sweet flatbread featuring caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, crisp apple slices, and fresh thyme, perfect as an appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 large pre-made flatbread or pizza crust
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 medium apple (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: balsamic glaze for drizzling

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place flatbread on a baking sheet.
  2. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until caramelized and golden brown.
  3. Spread caramelized onions evenly over the flatbread. Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
  4. Arrange apple slices on top of the cheese. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly and edges are crisp.
  6. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and optionally drizzle with balsamic glaze before slicing and serving.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
