A savory, flaky puff pastry slab topped with sweet caramelized onions, nutty Gruyère cheese, and fresh thyme, perfect as an appetizer or light meal.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Crust:
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Remove from heat.
- Roll out puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet. Prick all over with a fork, leaving a 1-inch border around edges. Brush edges with egg wash.
- Spread caramelized onions evenly over the pastry within the border. Sprinkle Gruyère cheese and thyme leaves on top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until pastry is puffed and golden brown. Let cool slightly before slicing into squares. Serve warm.
