Description

A savory, flaky tart filled with caramelized onions, bacon, and a creamy custard, a traditional dish from Germany.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 pre-made pie crust or homemade dough
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out pie crust and press into a tart pan. Prick the bottom with a fork and pre-bake for 10 minutes.
  2. In a large skillet, cook bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, melt butter and add onions. Cook over medium-low heat until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Spread caramelized onions over the pre-baked crust, top with bacon, thyme, and cheese. Pour egg mixture over the top.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the filling is set and golden. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
