Description

The Muffuletta is one of the most famous sandwiches to come out of New Orleans. Known for its bold layers of Italian deli meats, provolone cheese, and a tangy olive salad packed inside a round sesame loaf, this sandwich is big on flavor and perfect for sharing. Traditionally served at room temperature, the muffuletta gets even better as it rests, allowing the olive mixture to soak into the bread and create a rich, savory bite every time.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Olive Salad

  • 1/2 cup green olives, chopped
  • 1/2 cup black olives, chopped
  • 1/4 cup giardiniera (Italian pickled vegetables), chopped
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Sandwich

  • 1 large round muffuletta loaf or sesame Italian bread
  • 6 slices Genoa salami
  • 6 slices mortadella
  • 6 slices ham
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

    • Prepare the olive salad
In a medium bowl, combine green olives, black olives, giardiniera, capers, garlic, roasted red peppers, olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, and black pepper. Mix well.
    • Let the flavors develop
Allow the olive mixture to sit for at least 30 minutes so the flavors can blend together.
    • Slice the bread
Cut the muffuletta loaf horizontally into two halves. If the bread is thick, scoop out a little of the inside to make room for the filling.
    • Spread the olive mixture
Spoon about half of the olive salad over the bottom half of the bread and spread evenly.
    • Layer the meats and cheese
Add layers of salami, mortadella, ham, and provolone cheese evenly across the sandwich.
    • Top with remaining olive salad
Spread the remaining olive mixture over the cheese layer.
    • Assemble the sandwich
Place the top half of the bread over the fillings and press down gently.
    • Wrap and rest
Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This helps the olive oil soak into the bread and enhances the flavor.

    • • Slice and serve
Cut the sandwich into wedges and serve at room temperature.

Notes

– Letting the muffuletta rest in the refrigerator for 1–4 hours improves the flavor dramatically.

– For an authentic taste, use a sesame-seeded muffuletta loaf if you can find one.

– The sandwich is perfect for picnics, game day, or parties because it can be made ahead of time.

– Leftovers can be wrapped tightly and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
